AXUM

A X U M

.

.

.

The AXUM VERSION 3.0 is a modular completely preprogrammed platform that can grow with you and your organization any time, any moment.

I/O cards can be shared between systems and a Broadcast station that has decided to use the AXUM as their main and support mixers can be sure to have invested in a future proof product. The AXUM can be used for small local 4 fader desktop use as well as large scale (128 faders max) production work and every configuration in between.

Imagine a console where you can decide yourself what a switch/encoder or fader will do for you. Not possible?

With the AXUM this is possible and... you can do that yourself by selecting a function out of hundreds of functions simply selectable from a database in your AXUM browser.

Two control surfaces (with their own CRM sections) in different studios sharing the same I/O rack is also no problem for the AXUM platform.

AXUM CONTROL PANEL

The AXUM is completely modular and allows selection out of various control surfaces.

You can choose out of 4 motor fader Drop Through sections, CRM section and  Control Module for play-out systems.

Any Control surface switch can do anything you want it to do, but… to not confuse you we have programmed a factory default assignment that represents the working procedures of the average Radio Studio to start with as a template.

CRM module

control module

CRM MODULE

The switches on the channel-strip are software assignable to a function.

For instance the ‘ON’ Switch can  be above or below the fader.

Switches have long life dual color LED’s. So every active function is clearly shown.

The basic desktop frames are built to use as a drop through frame in a furniture surface.

There are 4 fader sections and a CRM section as well as an optional Control Section for Play-out software.

All control surfaces have the option for a redundant Power Supply.

An ETX control unit is a necessity to communicate with the above sections over LAN.

Front Axum-UI-Control panel

The Control module is a free programmable bank of switches to load all sorts of commands into for our AIRCAST play-out software.

A very convenient way of quickly drop jingles into your show.

I/O-cards

AXUM CARD

With the D&R AXUM’s modular concept, our MambaNet™ protocol controls the primary portion of the I/O rack. Each I/O card is shared in the network and can be controlled from the network.

The I/O cards together with the rack will behave as a large Matrix in the network. Every inserted DSP card gives you 32 stereo channels with full control over the EQ and dynamics of the audio, a maximum of 4 DSP cards is accepted.

- The huge amount of in- and outputs per card could not be

designed with a dedicated (jack/Cinch/XLR) connector in the

space available on the front of the card.

- By using standard STP cables in every input and output module a

compact and neat cabling can be achieved.

Due to standardization, changes in wiring can be achieved very

easily without the need for soldering.

- These low cost Cat-5 cables are ready made available from us or

from your nearest computer store starting at lengths of 30cm. up to

  20 meters.

If you need to connect a MICROPHONE to the AXUM, take our 19” breakout panel (part number 60882045).

Mount it in your studio rack, hook up a shielded RJ45 (STP) cable between the RACK and this Mic input panel and you're ready.

This also includes the remote wiring! No need to buy twice the amount of expensive XLR’s.

We have five types of patch panels available to choose from, see below.

Axum 19 inch frame

RACK ONE  (3HE) can accept 21 one slot cards.

There are 16 available slots for I/O cards

(5 are used for POWER and Engine card)

Weight is 4.6 kg with an 80% card fill.

Double AXUM Rack

RACK TWO (6HE) accepts 40 I/O one slot cards.

Two internal power supplies cards (3 slots each on the left side) are necessary as well as one Engine card (2 slots, on the right hand side of the Rack), a redundant power supply is optional.

If you just want I/O routing no DSP card is necessary.

But if you want signal processing one DSP card is always necessary to control 32 stereo channels as a maximum.

More DSP cards (4 max) give more processing channels (up to 128)

A range of I/O cards can slide into the 19" rack to achieve the necessary number of analog and digital in and outputs your studio needs.

Any changes can be performed while ON-AIR.

interfaces for the AXUM

The D&R AXUM interfaces easily with CobraNet™ and Dante compatible devices, it is designed as a long term solution to the needs of broadcast facilities for future innovations and developments in broadcast audio and software.

Dante_logo

This is Dante!

Dante replaces long runs of specialized analog cables between microphones, mixers, processors, amplifiers and speakers by connection through your computer network, effortlessly sending all channels of audio over Ethernet cables with perfect digital fidelity.

All connections are now managed with software, making routes fast, readable and reliable. Because all devices share in the same network, signals can be send between any devices no matter where they are located on a site, with no change to the wiring at all.

CobraNet logo

This is CobraNet!

CobraNet is a combination of software, hardware, and network protocols designed to deliver uncompressed, multi-channel, low-latency digital audio over a standard Ethernet network. Developed in the 1990s, CobraNet is widely regarded as the first commercially successful audio-over-Ethernet implementation.

CobraNet was designed for and is primarily used in large commercial audio installations such as convention centers, stadiums, airports, theme parks, and concert halls. It has applications where a large number of audio channels must be transmitted over long distances or to multiple locations.

break-out panels

The defacto standard for interfacing digital audio components to I/O racks is by use of RJ45 connectors with STP (Shielded Twisted Pair) cable.

D&R used this breakout system in earlier D&R consoles with succes. The rack-mounted interface units have either balanced ¼” Jacks and/or XLR connectors on the front panel and shielded RJ45 connectors on the back panel that are used to connect to the I/O rack. Below you see a number of passive break out panels.

It is also possible to create an extra "virtual" mixer without having to buy the hardware control surface.

cabling

All system parts of the AXUM will be connected using the well known Ethernet standard.
These connections have to be confirming IEEE 802.3 standard, where each system part has a 100BASE-TX connection.

With switches you can make larger networks with various types of interconnectivity.
We advice to only use managed switches in your system, although unmanaged switches will function normally.

For your info STP cable is the only choice and can be used up to lengths of 100 meters.

If your system only has one single surface and one I/O rack, it is possible to connect these system parts with a cross cable (after you have configured your I/O rack). This is a basic setup, saves cost, but it means you can not expand your system without first adding a switch in your network.

All external audio equipment can be connected to the passive
19” rack-mount breakout panels with standardized connectors such as XLR male/female and jacks as described earlier.

From these 19” passive rack-mountable breakout panels you can connect the XLR/Jack in/outputs that are hardwired to RJ45 connectors on the back of these panels directly to your AXUM system with shielded twisted pair cable (STP).

The I/O cards in the 19” AXUM rack have equivalent RJ 45 connectors to accept these STP cables.

It depends upon the installation needs which passive rack-mount breakout panel will be used to connect with the AXUM I/O cards.

just some thoughts

- When planning your studio, there are maybe some

things you need to also think about concerning the

amount of in and outputs you need.

- A maximum of 4 control surfaces (mixers) can be

  connected to RACK-ONE or RACK-TWO.

This can also be virtual mixer controlled by our optional

  Remote software application application.

- You need to consider how many processing channels

you want (32 processing channels per DSP card, 4 max).

- Also the number of busses per DSP card needs to be

considered, there are 16 stereo mixing busses per DSP

card that can be used for  Program buss, Cue buss, Aux

  busses etc.

- Additional there are 4 stereo monitor busses available

  per DSP card.

- To have more control surfaces in different rooms

hooked up to one Rack is an economical way of

  building a networked studio.

- But for redundancy and maintenance it is more wise to

be able to switch between 2 complete systems.
